Colombo, Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka’s tourism industry continues its upward trajectory, recording a significant 17% year-on-year increase in tourist arrivals during the first 20 days of November 2024. With a total of 120,961 visitors, the country is well-positioned to achieve its annual target of 2 million arrivals.

The average daily tourist arrivals in November have surged to 6,048, a 17% increase compared to October’s daily average. To maintain this momentum and reach the monthly target of 198,069 arrivals, Sri Lanka needs to attract an average of 7,711 tourists daily for the remainder of the month.

India Remains Top Source Market

India continues to be the leading source market, contributing 26,717 visitors in the first 20 days of November. Russia follows closely with 20,157 arrivals, followed by Germany, the UK, and Australia.

Strengthening International Connectivity

The return of charter flights from airlines like Red Wings, Enter Air, Edelweiss, and Air Azur is boosting connectivity, particularly for Eastern European travelers. Jetstar’s recent launch of a direct route between Colombo and Singapore has further solidified Sri Lanka’s position as a regional tourism hub.

John Simeone, CEO of Jetstar Asia, expressed confidence in the new route’s potential to attract travelers from diverse markets, including Australia, and contribute to Sri Lanka’s tourism growth.

Optimism for the Future

With the peak winter season underway, industry stakeholders are optimistic about surpassing the annual target of 2 million arrivals. The combination of strong international connectivity, diverse tourism offerings, and the country’s natural beauty and cultural heritage is expected to drive further growth in the coming months.
